VISITING AN ART GALLERY WITH EMILY KORNYA

For many parents, museums often aren’t the first places that come to mind as child-friendly destinations. After all, there’s no touching, no running, and no snacking allowed in the galleries. On the other hand, there are limitless opportunities to let your imagination run wild, and incredible worlds of colour and shape to explore.

When we go to art galleries, we encourage the children to find paintings that they like and tell me about them. We do little “art hunts” for example by looking for animals in painting or looking for shapes and colours. We ask the children general questions such as “what can you see?”, “how does it make you feel?”, “what title would you give this work, and why?” etc. Of course, often, they just wizz by the art and don’t want to look, but you only need one painting to grab their attention for the visit to have been worth while! And usually we DO find something and then we talk about it extensively.

Two weeks ago when shooting with Emily Kornya for a playdate post in Village Saint Paul, we were kindly invited into Olivia Cletienne‘s art gallery. Mahaut, Ombline and Adrian decided to go first and Emily had the pleasure of joining them. Of course she took her camera in as well.

HOTSPOT – WARHOL UNLIMITED

Paris is a difficult city to visit. Yes, you’ve read it correctly, I wrote difficult… Sure, not in the typical difficult kind of way, otherwise it would be hard to reach the status as the most visited city in the world. 

Paris is ‘difficult’ for a way more pleasant reason: it offers a lot of options and the multitude of choices could almost-almost paralyse you. What to visit? Where to go? How can you squeeze everything into your stay? Can you even?

The answer to that last question is simple: non, pas de tout. I know for a fact that even if you live a Parisien life, there’s just too much to choose from to be able to indulge yourself in it all. But that should, of course, never stop us from going and see as much as we can, there is always plenty to keep our senses stimulated for quite a while. This is Paris after all.

This month is no exception. There is a lot happening around the city and that’s why Alexander and I joined our friend Tiphaine from the blog Simples et Purs and her magical trio earlier today to the Warhol Unlimited exhibition hosted by the Museum of Modern Art (MaM).

This is a little-known work of Andy Warhol’s, yet, his biggest-scaled ever and this is the first time ever presented outside of the United States. The star series of this exhibition is undoubtedly Shadows, a striking group of 102 silkscreened canvases of 17 different colours more than 130 metres long, created in 1978-79. These works are a commanding reminder of Warhol’s flouting of art’s conventions, from the conception of works through to their presentation. Asked if these pictures were art, Warhol answered negatively: “There was disco music playing at the exhibition party, so I guess that makes them disco decor.”

The rest of the tour features series like, for instance, the Electric Chairs (1964–1971), the Jackies (1964), the Flowers (1964–1965) and the Maos (1972–1973).

This exhibition is bound to please any Warhol fan eventhough it’s a short exhibition. And yes, it’s even suitable for children I find. Alexander enjoyed himself and Tiphaine’s children as well.

[If you happen to visit between now and Halloween, please note there’s ‘The House of Horrors’ in the basement of the museum. A scary ride that my 5 year old really enjoyed!]
