The Animals Observatory has just launched a new capsule collection inspired by the Finch School of Art. So what is this school all about? Designer Laia Aguilar pays hommage to this all girl’s art college in New York that was founded in 1900. Mrs. Cosgrave, the director & founder of Finch College said, “My chief object is to awaken Social Consciousness in the girls. I want my graduates to become powers in their communities, not idle fashionable women. I don’t teach these young girls actual Socialism, but Social Activism.” According to the Finch and it’s Future brochure, this college seems to have been quite a revolutionary “community in which each person is a creative participant as a learner, a worker, and a citizen.”

Although the school closed in 1976, the spirit carries on with this beautiful collection for boys and girls. Cherry red, bright blue and off-white retro arty prints make for timeless kids fashion in this new capsule collection by The Animals Observatory (a.k.a. TAO).

Laia Aguilar was inspired by The Finch Collection, an art school founded in 1900 located in Manhattan's Upper East Side. 

Lava red, bright navy blue and off-white in patterns with a retro feel, plus feminine shirts with a nod to haute couture.

The Animals Observatory, an innovative brand whose aim is to research and develop creativity in fashion, clothes, accessories and other products from the world of children, under the creative direction of Laia Aguilar. The Animals Observatory is located in Europe, but the brand has been founded with a global outlook. The key value of The Animals Observatory is to think about the child, not as someone’s son or daughter, but as an individual.

Having become increasingly interested in art in its broadest senses, Laia Aguilar has combined the functionality of comfortable, attractive clothes with a history with motifs and inspirations that she gets from many varied sources: from the graphic world of the 1970s to the sculptures of Henry Moore; from the photographs of Elaine Constantine to the architecture of Barragán, from the drawings of Le Corbusier to the furniture of Charlotte Perriand.

But the most important or central influence on her new brand is perhaps the animal world seen through the eyes of a child, with curiosity, empathy and excitement.

All of these elements combine and give life to The Animals Observatory, which aims to be the clothes brand of our children’s children, in a timeless trend that has nothing to do with fashion that is close to little family stories.

Eén van de merken waarvan we weten dat de items de winkels uitvliegen is het Spaanse The Animals Observatory. Vorig seizoen waren de gaafste items binnen no time uitverkocht in alle (web)shops. Nu snap ik dat ook helemaal, want ik ben ook echt fan van dit merk. Dat relaxte baggy stijltje daar hou ik gewoon heel erg van. Net als die verwassen kleuren wat echt een Spaans ding lijkt te zijn, want veel Spaanse merken hebben diezelfde soort kleuren.

Ook dit seizoen heeft The Animals Observatory weer een aantal meer dan geweldige musthaves in de collectie. De wijde highwaisted broeken zijn voor zowel meisjes als jongens echte toppers! Ok, je kind moet er een beetje lef voor hebben, maar hoe geweldig zijn die broeken? De sweatpants zijn altijd fijne items voor kids dus die mogen niet ontbreken in de kledingkast. En die lekker wijdt vallende sweaters? Die zou ik bijna zelf wel willen hebben, heerlijk om te dragen op koude dagen zo’n baggy sweater.

Ik ga zelden voor complete looks van merken, want ik verzin het liefste mijn eigen combinaties. Maar deze keer heeft The Animals Observatory toch een aantal outfits gemaakt die ik toch wel één op één over zou kunnen nemen. Ik vind niet alleen de items gaaf, maar ook de lookbook foto’s zijn, wat mij betreft, echt top!
